October 2008

Continuing with our theme from last month - visiting - my good friend Jaime and her daughter Ella came to visit from Atlanta. We had a blast going to the Zoo, visiting lots of parks and stopping by our favorite painting joint again. At times it felt surreal that Jaime and I were now mothers together when it seems like just yesterday we were tipping over port-a-potties with our cars. I guess the more correct word would be "ramming," not "tipping."

October was a wonderful month and although it's still a scorcher here, we got to teach August all about many fall institutions such as pumpkins, football, trick-or-treating and elections. Aside from the election of our first African-American President (okay, I know that didn't technically happen until November), the other momentous, wonderful and necessary change was... a haircut for August and this time it was cut short! He went from little surfer dude to big boy in just a few clips. We love how it looks and the fact that we no longer have to use detangler in the back of his head. This haircut set the stage for this new stage we're in in which August knows exactly what he wants and doesn't want and likes to do things himself. He will point to himself and say "Aug!" and that means that he wants to do it. It is wonderful to watch him figure things out like how to get in and buckle his car seat himself, put his shoes on, brush his own teeth and put the key in the door. It is not so wonderful to be chasing a running toddler around the room ten times simply trying to change their shirt. The other day, I asked my mom, "At what other job is the person you're trying to help constantly running away from you?" and she answered, "Psych ward?" That sums it up precisely!

We had a great Halloween - once again, all three grandmas were here which meant three times the fun! We went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood with our buddies Ava, the ballerina and Henry, the pumpkin. We had primed August with teaching him about how we knock on people's doors and then when they open the door we say, (in his voice) "Ti-Teet!" I was actually surprised at how long the kids lasted trick-or-treating, but I figure that they knew it was a special occasion since they were allowed to be roaming free after dark!
