November 2008

Unfortunately, the words that best sum up November are as follows... Seven-day stomach flu. Poor August had it bad. Matt and I both got it too (all at the same time, joy), but luckily ours lasted only a few days. It's tough to see a busy little bee like August suddenly be anchored to the couch and napping throughout the day like a newborn (although I have to admit that it was nice to just sit for a change). What has been just as hard is getting back on track since this ill-fated experience. August has been eating pasta (plain pasta with olive oil and a little Parmesan cheese) for basically every meal since he got sick. I think it's his body trying to gain some weight back and his stomach telling him to take it slow and eat very mellow stuff. We came out on the other side with a few foods that used to be his favorite, that he'll no longer eat. Avocados are one of them and it's so sad to see since he LOVED them and they are packed with good nutrients. Maybe he'll come around. One thing is eating now that he wasn't before is oranges, so you win some, you lose some.

The rest of the month, everyday that we felt better made us so grateful. When August was eating and it was staying down, that was our high point of the day! And luckily it all got better in time to enjoy Thanksgiving. This year, instead of celebrating the traditional Thanksgiving between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims, we celebrated sort of an East meets West Thanksgiving between the American and the Japanese - mashed potatoes, stuffing and sushi - perfect. Just the way it would have been had this historical event actually occurred.
